Repo Rate is the rate at which the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) lends money to commercial banks or financial institutions in India against government securities. The current Repo Rate in 2023 is 6.50%. If the RBI lowers the Repo Rate, it increases the money supply in the market, which can help the economy grow.
Federal Reserve Banks are often called the "bankers' banks" because they provide services to commercial banks similar to the services that commercial banks provide for their customers. Federal Reserve Banks distribute currency and coin to banks, lend money to banks, and process electronic payments.
The Federal Reserve is not funded by congressional appropriations. Its operations are financed primarily from the interest earned on the securities it owns—securities acquired in the course of the Federal Reserve's open market operations.
Commercial banks make money by providing and earning interest from loans such as mortgages, auto loans, business loans, and personal loans. Customer deposits provide banks with the capital to make these loans.
Federal law sets requirements for the percentage of deposits a bank must keep on reserve, either at the local Federal Reserve Bank or in its own vault. Any money a bank has on hand after it meets its reserve requirement is its excess reserves. It's the excess reserves that create money.
Commercial banks serve consumers and small and medium-sized businesses, providing loans, bank accounts, and credit cards. They can also offer online banking, real estate loans, and limited investment opportunities. Investment banks cater to investors, governments, and corporations.

How does the Fed get money to banks?
The Fed creates money by purchasing securities on the open market and adding the corresponding funds to the bank reserves of commercial banks.
Federal Reserve Banks' stock is owned by banks, never by individuals. Federal law requires national banks to be members of the Federal Reserve System and to own a specified amount of the stock of the Reserve Bank in the Federal Reserve district where they are located.
The current Fed rate is 5.25% to 5.50%. That's according to the Federal Open Market Committee (FOMC), the monetary policymaking part of the Federal Reserve that holds eight scheduled meetings a year to set the federal funds rate.
Over time, credit unions have gained access to federal contingent liquidity sources (for example, credit unions who qualify may now borrow from the Federal Reserve discount window), but the CLF continues to be an important back-up source of liquidity for both Federal- and state-chartered credit unions.
Bank loans issued by commercial banks expand the quantity of bank deposits. Money creation occurs when the amount of loans issued by banks increases relative to the repayment and default of existing loans.
Do you consider a commercial bank to be a "creator of money' in the economy? Do you consider a commercial bank 'creator of money' in the economy'? A commercial bank is a trader and creator of money. Commercial banks do not contribute to quantum of money supply in the economy as they do not have note-issuing authority.
Millionaires also have zero-balance accounts with private banks. They leave their money in cash and cash equivalents and they write checks on their zero-balance account. So is the Fed private or public? The answer is both. While the Board of Governors is an independent government agency, the Federal Reserve Banks are set up like private corporations. Member banks hold stock in the Federal Reserve Banks and earn dividends.
Today, the Fed is tasked with managing U.S. monetary policy, regulating bank holding companies and other member banks, and monitoring systemic risk in the financial system. The seven-member Board of Governors, the system's seat of power, is based in Washington, DC, and currently led by Fed Chair Jerome Powell.
