Gas plan draws lot of CHOTEAU The Bureau of Land Management's first public meeting on a company's proposal to drill for natural gas in the Rocky Mountain Front attracted about 150 people here Monday, and the agency says it has already received more than 12,000 e-mail comments on the proposal. The agency received so many e-mails, in fact, that the government account was temporarily overloaded after the first week, BLM officials said.

The turnout in Choteau and the deluge of e-mail comments are clear indicators of just how contentious the plan by Startech Energy Inc. of Calgary, Alberta has become. The company has submitted a request to drill three natural gas wells in an area of the Front known as the Blind Horse Outstanding Natural Area. The site is located about 75 miles northwest of Great Falls in Teton County. Startech's natural gas leases predate the area's designation as an outstanding natural The company wants permission to build a well pad and other equipment on about four acres.

The plan also calls for about eight miles of new pipeline and 200 feet of new road to access the site. If the three wells prove productive, Startech also would resume production at other wells in the area. While additional environmental reviews would be needed, the Startech wells also could lead to other "reasonable" development in" the future, according to Dave Mari, district manager of the BLM office in Lewistown, said the agency is aware of the controversy surrounding the proposal. "We know many people are passionate about "this area," he said Monday. LAUD The agency is taking public comment on the company's proposal and holding more public meetings this month in Great Falls, Helena, Missoula and Browning.

The BLM will collect public opinion and use it to draft an environmental impact statement on the company's plan. That study will include alternatives for drilling and minimizing effects to the environment. The draft EIS should be complete in February 2005. Jeff Littlepage of Fairfield said he went to Monday's meeting to learn more about the project. He was surprised to learn that the Startech proposal could spur so much additional drilling.

"A little development is good, but that's a fragile area," he said. Others attended the meeting to make it clear they oppose any development on the Front. "We're here to tell them, 'No means said Ric Valois, a member of the group Environmental Rangers. "As long as I am breathing, they will not drill." GE Others, however, said the proposal could bring highpaying jobs to the area and improve Teton County's tax base..
