Solving The Megaminx

Hello Guys! This is TheGreatCK!

This instructable is about how to solve a megaminx. A megaminx is basically a dodecahedron having 12 sides.

............

Solving a megaminx is just like a 3X3 Rubik's Cube and to go through this instructable, you NEED to know how to solve a 3X3 Rubik's Cube. In case you don't, click here. This method of solving a megaminx is invented by me, and though the basic layout is same, the moves are entirely based on the normal 3X3 Rubik's Cube. In case you learn this method and tell someone else, don't forget to give me credit. Anyway, let's get started!

................

Steps involved-

  • The plus and corners ....................................(Same like the Rubik's Cube)
  • Middlepieces and last two pieces ................. (Same like the Rubik's Cube)
  • Bottom 'V' of the snake.................................. (A move which uses one algorithm from the Rubik's Cube)
  • Complete the snake....................................... (One megaminx move)
  • Wash the Face and Position Corners........... (2 Algorithms from Rubik's Cube used)
  • The Dots........................................................ (2-3 Megaminx Moves)

Let's Go!

Step 1: The Plus and Corners

Solving the Plus And Corners

This step is EXACTLY like the Rubik's Cube.

_______________________________________________________________________________________________

You have to make a plus ,or rather five point plus, or a star on any face. Just like you do on the Rubik's Cube. You can also refer back to my Solving The Rubik's Cube (Faster And Easier) instructable because this step matches with its first step.

Look at image 1

................

Now do any 4 corners on your megaminx. Leave one just like that.

Look at image 2

Step 2: Middlepieces and Last Two Pieces

Do the Middlepiece and Last 2 Ones

Even this step matches with the Rubik's Cube.
.........................
We have to solve the middlepieces. Follow images 1,2,3

..........................

Now we have to solve the last 2 remaining pieces (image 4). You must be familiar with this step from the Rubik's Cube. Follow images 5,6 for a little guidance.

Still a lot to go!

Step 3: Bottom 'V' of the Snake

Solving The Bottom 'V' (corner & sidepiece)

If you look at image 1 here, you'll realise what I mean by 'snake'.

And image 2 are the three pieces on each bottom of the snake, which we're gonna solve.

First, we'll solve the side pieces. You have to do this yourself without breaking the solved pieces. There is no algorithm for this.

Now to bring the corner in place follow images 3,4. A video of the algorithm in image 4 is given below.

Step 4: Completing the Snake.....And One More Piece

Completing the Snake and solving the One Remaining Piece

Here, you have to complete the snake by adding a corner in the right place.(Image 1). Its just like you put a corner in place in a Rubiks Cube. Look at image 2.

And you also have to put the middlepiece above the corner that you just solved. For that, there is an algorithm which is in image 3. A video for the algorithm in image 3 is also given.

Step 5: Wash the Face and Position the Corners

Solving a Plus On The Top and position the Corners

This is the main hard part of solving the megaminx.

Now, you have to bring about this position.(image 1). And then (image 2)

......................................

So, follow algorithms in images 4,5,6,7. These might be your possible positions. Remember that when you look at these pictures, consider ONLY THE ORIENTATION OF THE MIDDLEPIECES and no other piece matters in the picture.

........................................

Then to bring the corners in place, follow image 7. There's only 1 algorithm. You might need to do it more than once or twice.

Step 6: Completing the Top and Solving the Dots

Completing the Remaining Top and doing the Dots

Last step of the solving. Please remember that in whatever algorithms I have given here, if you go wrong, even in one move, it won't be reversible. You'll have to go back again to step 3. So pay attention here.

...........................................
To turn the corners upwards there's an algorithm. Follow image 1. You might need to do it more than once or twice. There's also one more bonus algorithm which is given in a video below called 'Bonus Algorithm'.
...........................................

Your Megaminx may be in a position like the images given here. Match your position and carry out the algorithms given there. There is one- a common algorithm for all of the possible positions. It is also given in a video below.
.................................................

Remember that here, as I have given it for making it easier, one algorithm in a position may lead to another position. I have done this to make it easy for you. I have given all the possible positions that might occur. In case you encounter a position which is not give here, post your position (with a photo) and I'll give you a solution and add it here. Best of luck with your last step!
