Finally, one lead, politely turned to them and in an informal personal way, looked right at them and said everyone could hear what they are saying, but paid to come hear me. People gasped, but he went right on with the show. Marvelous show!

Couldn't she have just said she's retiring from Broadway? Was the dramatic announcement of giving up her Equity card really necessary? She could return in the future which makes it rather awkward to issue a statement later saying, "Whoops, changed my mind."
If she returned to Broadway and never gave up her Equity card, then she could just say that a particular role came along that was just too good to pass up. But by giving up the Equity card makes the whole thing uber bitchy and cunty.

by Anonymous | reply 62 | October 17, 2022 7:43 PM |
I enjoyed Patti's autobiography, but some of it read like she could very well be a "Karen." Show biz has always been cutthroat, and she really took offense at Andrew Lloyd Webber screwing her over twice (once for Evita and later, again, for Sunset Boulevard). But some of those instances could honestly be cracked up to wanting strong box office returns, especially in Sunset's case. Why *wouldn't* ALW want a major Hollywood star to open that show on Broadway? Is it possible Patti wasn't easy to work with and that also tipped the scales in someone else's favor? She has had issues on sets before, and we tend to hear mostly her version of events, but just maybe she is the problem.
I certainly can forgive Lilias White yelling at an audience member and assuming the device was a phone. People do that kind of thing all of the time now, and it's obnoxious enough just for the audience around them who choose to behave and actually watch the show on stage instead of checking social media or recording it. Anyone doing that should be evicted from the theater immediately. The visually or hearing impaired should have their devices marked somehow so it is clear to everyone that it's an aid and not simply rude behavior.

I can't.
That's the job of the ushers and the house management, and absolutely [bold]not[/bold] the job of the performers.
By interrupting the show to scold an audience member, the performers only make everything uncomfortable for the rest of the audience and bring them out of it.
The only time it's allowable to me is if the audience member is using flash photography, which can endanger people on stage and so needs to be stopped immediately. Otherwise, the actor is just being a control freak and should be more "in" the moment anyway rather than monitoring the audience.

Here's what I glean:
There was friction between Patti and Katrina Lenk, the lead of Company. Early in the run, they would exist the curtain call arm-in-arm. At some point they stopped doing that. Also, when Patti went on her "Chris Columbus (or whoever it was) pays my salary" rant, you could see that Lenk had a "not this again" look on her face.
I believe Patti was ANNOYED when the mask mandate for Broadway shows was lifted at the end of June. I think that might be why she turned in her Equity card. And, I think she exited the show as soon as she was contractually allowed, which pissed off the other members of the cast, because she was somewhat of a draw, having just won the Tony.
It's all very sad. I adore Patti LuPone, but unfortunately her temper sometimes gets the best of her. I can understand, however, her being upset about the mask mandate lifting. After all, she's 73, and she'd already had Covid once.
I very disappointing ending to her Broadway career, if this is it.

Interesting how few people have bothered to read the information or learn the facts before posting their opinions here. Ms. LuPone resigned from Equity months ago -before this recent incident happened. There is no connection between the two things, other than her comment saying, "Hey -leave me out of it." Her reasons for quitting had to do with changes to rules regarding dues/fees. She said that she didn't see herself having another role on Broadway at her age, so why should she continue to pay, and at a higher rate than before?
I am not her biggest fan, but she deserves the respect she has earned from her 50-year career on Broadway, and the iconic roles she created or played. She has strong opinions and is not afraid to state them. That makes her more of a Datalounger than anything else.

Dataloungers always think because THEY revere someone and some of their friends do, that everyone else does (or did).
When her health was failing and she was giving bad shows at the end of her life at nightclubs, audiences would become restless (and Allen saw some of that).
She was still adored by many, but she had to play smaller venues as she got older, and some people went to see her who did not keep shrines to her in their apartments.
Read the biographies of her.

I've wondered the same thing. Poor Patti must have some deep-rooted insecurity, paranoia, or other neurosis. She could be enjoying the twilight of her career or resting on her laurels and basking in the adoration of her fans, instead she continues to behave like a bitch and create unnecessary drama with some sort of new outburst every few years.

“Broadway has also changed considerably,” LuPone said. “I think we’ve spent — not we, but whoever’s in charge of, whatever — has actively dumbed down the audience. And so the attention span of the majority of the audience, I think, is much less than it was in the past, and I don’t think plays are going to have long lives on Broadway — I feel as though it’s turning into Disneyland, a circus and Las Vegas.”
“There’s still very intelligent audiences that support the theater, but the ticket price is outrageous,” LuPone continued. “There’s so many obstacles that prevent theater from being the tool it should be in society, which is an education.”

She was absent from Broadway from 1987 through 1995, I believe because she was raising her son. She won her first Tony for EVITA in 1980 and her second for GYPSY in 2008. For what shows could she have expected to win Tonys for in the interim? I would say the only serious possibility was SWEENEY TODD.

Patti to me is a real piece of work, and she makes me roll my eyes, but even so I love her because she knows exactly who and what she is. She knows she's a pain in the ass and a diva, and she's okay with that. She's enormously talented on stage (although she's like Ethel Merman or Carol Channing and usually too much for the screen), and she's funny, and she genuinely laughs at herself like Merman and Channing did. I'm glad I've never had to work with her, but I find her quite lovable at a distance.
As someone said above, she's a take-her-or-leave-her kind of star. Dataloungers who love difficult divas for some reason always think they can [bold]harangue[/bold] others into liking their divas (as they are doing above), but it's no good: if her personality turns you off, it turns you off.

She doesn’t want to pay the dues, doesn’t want to reapply, is built for 8 performances a week but doesn’t want to do it anymore, and is over it. If she goes back to Broadway, she’ll do it as a guest. Equity “doesn’t know her.” Damn, Patti - calm down.

One generally doesn't "resign" from Equity (or SAG/AFTRA). Members planning not to be working under any union contracts for a while would generally ask to take "voluntary withdrawal," which can last indefinitely. During this time, a member would not have to pay dues. If, at some point, a member decided to become active again, he or she would just have to pay their current dues to work under an Equity contract again.
Of course, because our Patti loves to create drama offstage as well as on, she may have very well made some grand gesture and quit outright.

I ran into Patti once, in the Radio City Music Hall elevator during the Grammies. It was 1981 and Evita won for best Grammy of a Musical. In the elevator, she had changed into a white dress to sing 'Argentina'. She was the only person in the the elevator and I gasped when I walked in. She looked at me and I looked at her and said simply, 'You look lovely tonight'. She relaxed a bit and said 'Thank you' and smiled. That was all, but it was a moment.

I agree with some of that, but not the part about Patti being able to laugh at herself. In fact, it seems to me that she has shown zero sense of humor about herself. Remember how she squashed the project when Leslie Kritzer did a club act as "Patti LuPone at Les Mouches" and then wanted to record it? Also, I believe Patti was one of the very few stars who were openly not amused when they were parodied in "Forbidden Broadway."

I think you've got something there. I would imagine that tremendous public humiliation had a very negative affect on her personality. Offhand, I can't think of any examples of her being publicly bitchy before that -- though there were some non-public incidents, like when both she and Madonna were around at Lincoln Center in 1988 (Patti was doing ANYTHING GOES, Madonna was rehearsing SPEED-THE-PLOW), and Patti reportedly posted a note on the call board saying that there was only room for one Italian-American diva backstage at Lincoln Center. MAYBE she was trying to be funny, or not....

The aging process sure is interesting! She was a knockout beauty when young, could have been a movie star. Loved the part in her memoir when she said she didn't see her beauty until she visited Italy for the first time. Frumpy during Life Goes On, and then really glamorous and svelte throughout most of the 90s. She filled out a bit in the 00s and that shoulder-length bale of hay hair didn't do her any favors, but she still looked good in some of her character roles (thought the curly bob she wore during Gypsy favored her) but around War Paint she really got beautiful again, love the short hair, bangs out of her face, her skin looks great, she glows. And she still looks like herself.
Of course she's insecure, there's no underestimating what a number the Sunset Boulevard fiasco did to her ego. That was a public humiliation, coupled with her dissatisfaction during Life Goes On and several other professional problems until a "comeback" in Gypsy, that was over a decade without a major success. It changes a person. Contrasted with the major successes of her early career and innate confidence in her gift, you're left with someone who feels they're liable to be taken advantage of, someone who feels they constantly have to prove themselves worthy. It's fun to build up our most talented stars as divas, society needs its idols, but we can't forget that at the end of the day these are human beings. It should make us understand her point of view, feel sympathy, not dismiss her as a raging cunt. Her bedside manner may be brash, but she is rarely wrong. And let's not forget the recent loss of her brother which I'm sure she's still reeling from.

Judging from social media, the response of the general population to what LuPone has said and done is very divided. That's no surprise, as nowadays you can find twisted people who will agree with even the most outrageous behavior. But among entertainment industry professionals, the reaction to her antics seems to be mostly very negative.
Also, to repeat: While anyone with functioning brain cells would agree that there are huge problems with Equity, those problems don't seem to have much or anything to do with Patti LuPone, and her grievances certainly have absolutely nothing to do with recent events regarding Lillias White and that Porkalob person, despite her unfortunately successful attempt to hitch her publicity wagon to at least one of those events.

It's true the Andrew Lloyd Webber rather screwed her over and embarrassed her by taking away the opportunity for her contracted and agreed upon NY premiere of "Sunset Blvd", and she was compensated about $1 million, which she has said she put into her swimming pool. BUT, Andrew Lloyd Webber also wrote the show "Evita" which NY production made her a star. Had she not gotten that role and ultimately succeeded in it (with a very capable understudy/matinee person ready to assume the role at any time back in the day), all of her career afterwards might not have been. I always wondered what would have happened to Streisand's career and the film of Funny Girl if Streisand hadn't caved into Stark's demand that if she didn't sign the multi film contract with him there was a chance she wouldn't have gotten that film. Who else would he have cast? Audiences wanted to hear who singing People? Edie Gorme? And if Babs didn't have that amazing intro to a worldwide audience what would her career have been like?
by Anonymous | reply 405 | October 20, 2022 7:56 PM |
Babs already made waves as a recording star. At worst, she would have got stuck in Disney fare and sitcomes, like Sandy Duncan.

I went to a dress rehearsal for 'Whistle Down the Wind' in London. It was suppose to be the first preview, but they cancelled that. However, anyone having tix could sit in the run thru. The big production table was in the center of the auditorium and Andrew Lloyd Webber was sitting there holding court with all the production people.
It was pretty calm during intermission and said went up to him and said, "Sir Andrew, I'm sure many people ask you, but may I have your autograph?" He seemed a bit flustered and said, "Oh, no, people rarely ask me for my autograph, unless it's a bill." We just spoke a moment till someone else came by, but he seemed like he appreciated someone just saying 'Hi'.

It is very possible that if she didn’t get Evita, LuPone might have taken a hit TV show or even a hit movie and her career gone to even greater heights.
All the discussion in here about her career having been diminished if she didn’t get Evita. It could have gone the other way too
by Anonymous | reply 427 | October 22, 2022 1:00 AM |
That makes little sense. She didn't do EVITA for a crazy amount of time. The roles didn't come rolling in WITH a launchpad like EVITA. And with her looks, the movies always saw her as a supporting player.

Linda Lavin had her own TV show for a decade. And she has continued to get regular roles on TV throughout the years. Patti, in her own words, has always been a hard sell to TV executives.
by Anonymous | reply 430 | October 22, 2022 1:13 AM |
Lavin also had a really good arc on "Barney Miller" playing opposite DL dreamboat Max Gail years ago. That helped her getting "Alice" tv show as well.

That would never have happened in a billion years. Although I will agree when she was younger she was never attractive at a distance, but never close up. She never would have made it on TV or in the movies any better than she did. She is abrasive and loud in manner--it worked well for her playing a momma-bear type on "Life Goes On," but it would have been too jarring in roles for young women.
by Anonymous | reply 435 | October 22, 2022 3:46 AM |
Linda Lavin has also been a regular cast member of at least three TV series during the past 10-15 years: Sean Saves the World, Apt. 9JKL, and B Positive.
by Anonymous | reply 436 | October 22, 2022 3:47 AM |
Casting directors are known for bringing in Broadway stars for auditions for movie/TV roles. Patti must have had hundreds of chances and blew most of them given her distinctive abrasive looks and personality.
It wasn't an issue at a distance on stage, but clearly, audiences didn't want to see and hear her on a big screen or in their living rooms on TV
by Anonymous | reply 438 | October 22, 2022 3:55 AM |

Patti LuPone is a bigger LEGEND than any television star. What the fuck? She's the most famous voice and most gifted performer on the musical STAGE, ever. She knows it. We all know it.
She was nowhere near as abrasive or ugly as Striezand or Linda Lavin or Merman. Fuck right off. Patti was a sexy smart and supernaturally gifted woman. Progressive as fuck. She doesn't suck the public's dick. She gives them all she's got and allows them to make up their own mind. She worked her ass off to be great. And she gets fucking PISSED when respect is not paid. She's not charging by the note - she's respectful or her job and her GREAT gift.
I'm not insane. There are more beautiful voices - but none more impressive than Patti LuPone's.
by Anonymous | reply 440 | October 22, 2022 4:10 AM |
Think of how many Broadway musical stars actually did make it even bigger than Patti did on TV:
Dick van Dyke
Florence Henderson
Jean Stapleton
Beatrice Arthur
Linda Lavin
Bonnie Franklin
Jason Alexander
Megan Mullally
Jerry Orbach
Jesse L. Martin
Sarah Jessica Parker
Mandy Patinkin
For all of them to have made it and for Patti LuPone not to have made it at there levels must have been embarrassing for her.
To be thought of not as talented and less watchable than even Bonnie Franklin... wow...

It's weird to me that Broadways stars still exist. They aren't really very famous to the rest of the country or the world, unlike some Broadway stars of the past, who used to perform (act & sing) in movies or TV variety shows. Or when there were national magazines like Life, that promoted Broadway shows. This forum is about the only place I still see them discussed regularly.
by Anonymous | reply 472 | October 22, 2022 9:32 PM |
But on the other hand, R472, we're told that a huge percentage of the Broadway audience nowadays is made up of tourists from around the country and around the world, which was not true back in the day. So, back then, Broadway stars became well known to people outside of New York primarily through TV variety shows, etc., and now it happens mostly through people coming to NYC to see them perform. Plus, of course, now we have YouTube and podcasts and music downloads etc. etc. etc., and of course, Broadway actors still do appear on TV on late-night talk shows, etc.

Merman(variety shows and Mad World) and Martin(touring and Peter Pan) were nationally famous. Is Patti?
by Anonymous | reply 474 | October 23, 2022 5:07 AM |
Patti LuPone is famous nationally. What a dumb question. Patti and Bernadette both did many talk shows, concert appearances, film and TV shows. Bernadette can no longer sing and has not been a popular guest because she lacks everything else to be a good guest. But she was once a big thing.
Bernadette was the lovely young (looking) Broadway singer of choice for many TV appearances and she was quite special in most of them. Vulnerable etc.
Patti comes, leaves and sings as herself. She's a powerhouse talent and a great personality. All over from Merv Griffin to Joan Rivers to Carson, Fallon and Colbert. Just a few weeks ago. And a few months before that. She brought the house down.
As an actress, Patti is truly underrated. That's part of what makes her the greatest Broadway performer of all time. Patti is a very good actress AND not only when singing. Though she is magnificent then. Have a Little Priest is not angelica lansburies weak number at all. It belongs to Patti LuPone. She is precise, deadly and hilarious. She is the most powerful and heartbreaking Fantine. And Patti now owns ALL the GYPSY songs. NO one has performed them better. Whoever Ethyl Merman was - she couldn't really sing. And she for sure couldn't convey emotion. She's forgotten - except on DL and wikipedia. She's not a living experience and all existing footage of her singing makes a musician ask why? Yeah, she was LOUD. Patti is much more than loud.
Patti is on AHS this season. She's been in a number of Ryan Murphy productions. Since when does the public not know her? She's a star. A much bigger star than Audra McDonald or Bernadette or Liza or Barbra Cook. WTF.

Patti did a concert of torch songs at the Vivian Beaumont about twelve years ago, and although in fine voice was terribly boring.
She has an far from interesting presence on stage without a script, and she literally sang about thirty songs! People were staring at their watches and the applause became quite muted as the endless evening dragged on. She seemingly sang every song she knew the words to short of "I've Got a Lovely Bunch of Coconuts" and "Happy Birthday"!
