Most bagged mulch is sold in 2 cubic foot bags. So, for every 13.5 bags, you need one cubic yard. Example: If you used 54 bags last year, you would get the same amount of mulch in 4 cubic yards.

Weeds need light and warm soil to survive. To use mulch as a natural weed barrier, you need to put down a 2- to 3-inch layer. That's enough to keep most weed seeds from sprouting. Because you block their access to sunlight, they won't have enough energy to push through the mulch.

Organic mulches are those that will break down over time because they are based on natural materials such as tree bark, leaves, and pine needles. Inorganic mulches are petrochemical based products such as plastic sheeting or rubber chips. Consider using organic mulches in almost all situations!

Knowing how much mulch to use can be tricky. A 1-inch to 2-inch layer of fine mulch should be sufficient, while a coarser material should be 3 to 4 inches deep.
