LOS ANGELES — An Orange County judge on Friday ordered the union representing University of California academic workers to halt its strike at six campuses, ruling the walkout appeared to be causing "damage to students' education" during the critical end of the term quarter when finals are taken.

LOS ANGELES — A lot of barking goes on in a college football locker room. Coaches barking at players. Players barking at each other. The entire team barking and howling just before bursting onto the field to begin a game.

Garrett Crochet has been a pleasant surprise for the Chicago White Sox during a brutal start to the season. So pleasant that his increasing workload could become an issue. Before taking the mound against Boston, Crochet had already set career highs with 13 starts and 69 2/3 innings. The 6-foot-6 left-hander, who turns 25 on June 21, also has been the best pitcher for the majors’ worst team. The White Sox had lost 14 in a row going into the matchup with the Red Sox, a single-season franchise record and the majors’ longest streak since the Angels also dropped 14 straight in 2022.

Jake Irvin pitched six shutout innings and the Washington Nationals dealt Atlanta ace Chris Sale his first loss in nearly two months with a 2-1 victory over the Braves. Washington snapped a four-game losing streak and won for only the second time in eight games since taking three of four at Atlanta late last month. Sale (8-2) allowed two runs in seven innings in his first loss since April 13. Kyle Finnegan handled the ninth for his 17th save in 19 opportunities. The Nationals scored both their runs in the fourth on a throwing error and Ildemaro Vargas’ RBI single.

The Detroit Lions have lost one day of organized offseason workouts after breaking rules relating to on-field contact during a practice last month. The Lions had a three-day mandatory minicamp earlier this week. Detroit had a session of organized team activities planned on Monday for its final gathering before training camp next month but it has been forfeited.

A state judge has ordered academic workers at the University of California to temporarily halt their weekslong strike over the war in Gaza. An Orange County judge issued the emergency restraining order on Friday after UC officials argued the ongoing strike would cause irreversible harm as students are nearing finals. United Auto Workers Local 4811 represents 48,000 graduate students who work as teaching assistants, researchers and other academic employees on the 10-campus UC system. The union started its strike May 20 to protest campus treatment of members who participated in pro-Palestinian demonstrations.

The NCAA will allow advertisem*nts on football fields for regular-season games in all three divisions beginning this season. The move creates a new revenue stream for schools facing mounting costs in the changing college sports landscape. Advertisem*nts will be allowed on three spots on the field. There can be a single ad centered on the 50-yard line in addition to no more than two smaller flanking ads elsewhere. The ads could be placed on the field on a game-by-game basis or for the whole season. The NCAA says the change brings regular-season games in line with bowls and neutral-site games.

The Fitch agency says it has raised Cyprus’ credit rating by a notch to BBB+. In its statement Saturday, Fitch cited Cyprus' heightened ability to withstand financial shocks, the government's commitment to keeping its finances in order and a strengthened banking sector thanks in part to the lowest bad loan ratio since the global financial crisis. Fitch says it lists the island nation’s outlook as positive. The agency says Cyprus' household and corporate debt continued to fall last year, coming very close to the European Union average. It also points to the government’s “very strong fiscal performance” in the last two years, with a primary surplus to reach 4.5%. It calls that “by far the highest” among countries that use the euro as their currency.

The Atlantic Coast Conference has said its decision to file a lawsuit against Florida State was unanimous — among those who voted at a January meeting.

Canadian police have charged Austrian-Canadian auto parts billionaire Frank Stronach with sexual assault dating back to the 1980s. Peel Regional police say Stronach was arrested Friday and charged with five crimes including, rape, indecent assault on a female, sexual assault and forcible confinement. Police allege that the sexual assaults spanned from the 1980s to as recent as 2023. A lawyer for Stronach could not immediately be reached for comment.
